The President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated that he had called Vladimir Putin and asked him to suspend attacks on Ukrainian cities due to the extremely low temperatures, and that the Russian leader had agreed to do so.
“Russia has agreed to a partial ceasefire. For one week, it will refrain from all attacks on Ukrainian cities,”
Donald Trump announced.
During a cabinet meeting, the U.S. president said that he had asked Vladimir Putin “not to fire at Kyiv and other cities for a week. And he agreed to do it.” Due to ongoing attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, millions of people have lost electricity and heating, while temperatures in the country have dropped well below zero.
“They have never experienced such cold,”
Trump said.
Russia has not yet confirmed that it intends to stop attacks on Kyiv and other cities. President Trump also did not specify when he spoke with Putin.
The president also expressed optimism about the possibility of bringing the war in Ukraine to a swift end, a view echoed by the special envoy for peace missions, Steve Witkoff, who was present at the meeting. The presidential adviser said that “good things are happening” in the negotiations and that significant progress is being made.
On Wednesday, Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Moscow is planning another large-scale bombardment, despite plans for further talks over the weekend.
