“You are Poland’s Angela Merkel, you are Poland’s Ursula von der Leyen, and what’s worse is that you’re proud of it,” said German MEP Tomasz Froelich, addressing Donald Tusk.
A Display of Tusk’s Hypocrisy
This morning, Donald Tusk arrived in Strasbourg. He delivered a speech that did not resonate at all with what is currently happening in Poland. Polish MEPs were quick to point this out.
German MEP Humiliates Tusk
The reaction to Tusk’s remarks did not come solely from Polish MEPs. Politicians from other EU countries—who, as it turns out, also keep a close eye on the situation in Poland—spoke up. One of them was Tomasz Froelich, an MEP from Alternative for Germany (AfD), a right-wing German party.
Froelich, who is of Polish descent, opened his address in Polish:
“Panie premierze Tusk, pan chyba lepiej rozumie po niemiecku. A więc zrobię panu tę przyjemność. Herr Tusk”
(“Mr. Prime Minister Tusk, you probably understand German better. So I’ll do you this favor. Herr Tusk,”) he said, ironically.
He continued:
“Politicians like you are the greatest danger to Europe. When you were in opposition, with the help of the EU, you attacked your own country’s sovereignty.”
Froelich went on bluntly:
“You are destroying all of Europe.”
“Mass migration, censorship, geopolitical escalation, the Green Deal—these are all things you really push for, even though no one wants to hear about them anymore. […] You are Poland’s Angela Merkel, you are Poland’s Ursula von der Leyen, and the worst part is that you’re proud of it,” he concluded.
