What’s Next for the EU-Mercosur Agreement? MEP Has No Doubt: Tusk Raised the White Flag

Everything suggests that the agreement with Mercosur – harmful to European, including Polish, agriculture – will soon come into force. Waldemar Buda, Member of the European Parliament from Law and Justice (PiS), explained on social media what is currently happening around these provisions.

As a reminder, the European Commission‘s College of Commissioners adopted the agreement with the Mercosur bloc on Wednesday, despite Poland’s opposition. On that occasion, a vague announcement was made regarding a so-called “safety brake” in case of product surpluses, along with possible compensation for farmers. For now, however, there are no concrete solutions on the table.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk was supposed to discuss the pushed-through trade deal with South American countries on Thursday with French President Emmanuel Macron. These are the only two countries that have unequivocally declared their rejection of the agreement with Mercosur.

Rejecting the trade deal requires the opposition of countries representing at least 35% of the European Union’s total population. Poland and France together account for about 23% of the EU’s population.
Tusk spoke about the Mercosur agreement on his way back to Warsaw. Apparently, he has abandoned efforts to convince other European leaders.

Donald Tusk says there will be safeguard clauses, but everyone here knows that without German consent they will not be triggered. And they will allow it, because otherwise they would stop selling cars to South America,” we hear in the recording published on social media.

The MEP asks directly: “Where in all this is the food producer – the Polish one? The European one?”

The state of play on the Mercosur agreement:

  1. Tusk has capitulated.
  2. PSL says it is against but does nothing.
  3. Polish commissioner Piotr Serafin, the Prime Minister’s trusted man, did not object at the College of Commissioners.
  4. They talk about safeguard clauses, which everyone knows will not be used because…
