Today marks World Heart Day, a global observance celebrated in over 120 countries, including Poland. This year, the event is centred around the theme “Use Heart for Action,” encouraging individuals to take charge of their heart health while advocating for systemic changes in cardiovascular care. The campaign aims to empower citizens to influence leaders and prioritize cardiovascular health, emphasizing the need for action beyond mere awareness.
Polish Cardiac Society: Pioneering Heart Disease Prevention and Awareness Since 1954
The Polish Cardiac Society (PTK), a prominent advocate for heart disease prevention since its establishment in 1954, is at the forefront of these efforts. With a robust membership of over 5,500, the PTK conducts vital research, educates the public, and raises awareness about cardiovascular health. The Society focuses on mitigating risk factors such as obesity, hypertension, high cholesterol, and diabetes—conditions that are increasingly prevalent in today’s society.
Globally, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death, accounting for nearly 18 million fatalities each year, according to the World Health Organization. In Poland, the situation is equally dire, with cardiovascular diseases remaining the top cause of mortality. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated these issues, leading to a 17% increase in cardiovascular deaths during its first year, as noted by PTK President, Prof. Przemysław Mitkowski.
PTK Launches Educational Campaigns and Advocacy Efforts for World Heart Day 2024
In line with the 2024 theme, the PTK is launching a series of educational campaigns designed to inspire action and policy advocacy. A press conference will be led by Prof. Marcin Gruchała, Rector of the Medical University of Gdańsk, who will discuss the urgent need for early prevention, efficient diagnostics, and improved access to modern treatments for cardiovascular diseases. The PTK is also making valuable educational resources available online to help the public make informed decisions about their heart health.
One of the key highlights of this year’s campaign is the illumination of the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw on September 29, which will be lit in red to symbolize the significance of cardiovascular awareness. Through these educational initiatives and impactful gestures, World Heart Day serves as a crucial reminder that heart disease is preventable, and by taking concerted action, we can make a difference in promoting heart health for all.
