“To promise twice is like giving once,” said Radosław Sikorski, then head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during a dinner with former Finance Minister Jacek Rostowski in January 2014. Does this doctrine still apply in the Civic Platform (KO)? Friday’s statement by Senator Grzegorz Schetyna suggests so. The politician declared that Donald Tusk’s 100 promised policies would be fulfilled. However… only after the upcoming presidential elections.
During the 2023 election campaign, Civic Platform leader Donald Tusk promised “100 policies in 100 days.” Among them was the now-legendary “gasoline at PLN 5.19.” Senator Grzegorz Schetyna of the Civic Platform was asked on Radio Zet why this price had not yet been implemented. In fact, a listener questioned why the government was lying to people.
“We are not lying to people. Gasoline at PLN 5.19? It’s as cheap as it can be. We are limiting the possibilities of excise duties and taxes. This is the price of products on the exchanges, which is why we have to pay this much,” the politician argued.
He blamed the situation on the government having to focus on “security issues” and the fact that a lot of time had passed since the campaign—and, as Schetyna assessed, “everything has changed over the past few months.”
However, the politician assured that everything could still be done. But… after the elections.
“Please look at the situation—there are elections in May, and the second round of presidential elections is on June 1. Then there are two years until the parliamentary elections, and by then we will have to deliver on everything. All the election commitments made by individual parties and us as a coalition on October 15 must be fulfilled,” he stated.
He added that if the government fails to deliver on its promises, its politicians will be “held accountable” in the next parliamentary elections.
