    The Senate established 2023 as the Year of Nicolaus Copernicus, Wisława Szymborska, and Jan Matejko

    On Thursday, November 16, the Senate adopted a resolution establishing 2023 as the Year of Nicolaus Copernicus, wishing to commemorate the eminent Polish scientists.

    The first of the eminent Poles distinguished by the Senate is Wisława Szymborska. Read more about this phenomenal poet here. In 2023, we will celebrate her 100th birthday.

    The year 2023 is the 550th anniversary of the birth of the great Pole, Nicolaus Copernicus. He was an outstanding astronomer and creator of the heliocentric theory.

    Another distinguished Polish artist is Jan Matejko.The Senators point out that this outstanding artist consistently pursued his mission and presented an attitude of civic service to the nation.

    “Matejko’s works aim was to show the causes of the fall of the First Polish Republic and to remind its glorious past and former power. In this way, he convinced Poles living under the partitions of the value of their cultural heritage and sustained efforts to regain independence.”
