21 Signatures and 1 Veto. Leśkiewicz: The President Takes a Reasonable Approach to the Law

The president represents the voice of at least 10 million 600 thousand Poles who voted for him in the presidential election. These people do not agree with the solutions related to wind turbines, but they do want a freeze on electricity prices. Therefore, the president made a firm, manly decision, like a responsible politician, and sent a clear signal to the parliamentary majority about his expectations, said presidential spokesman Rafał Leśkiewicz, commenting on Karol Nawrocki’s veto of the so-called wind turbine bill. He added that on the same day the president signed 21 other bills.

On Thursday, President Karol Nawrocki vetoed the so-called wind turbine bill. He emphasized that, contrary to what government representatives claim, “this bill concerns wind turbines, not lowering electricity prices.” At the same time, he submitted his own draft bill concerning electricity prices.

Presidential spokesman Rafał Leśkiewicz spoke about the president’s proposal on TV Republika. He explained that while its provisions are based on a draft bill prepared by the government, they omit elements unrelated to energy prices.

“The only difference is that there is no provision about wind turbines, so those 96 pages were simply thrown into the trash, while two pages—with good regulations on freezing electricity prices—were now submitted to the Polish parliament,” he said.

He noted that the future of the president’s draft now depends on Speaker of the Sejm Szymon Hołownia. “The Speaker can refer this bill for parliamentary work, he can send it to public consultations—he has several options. But I assume that as the second most important official in the country, and as a responsible public servant, he will make an important decision just as he did when he convened the National Assembly despite heavy pressure exerted on him […]. And I believe he will refer this draft to parliamentary work very quickly, because we all expect electricity prices to be frozen,” he declared.

He added that the president will soon present another energy-related proposal. “Within the next few weeks, President Karol Nawrocki will submit another draft bill […] to reduce electricity prices by 33 percent. This is a comprehensive solution intended to ease the financial burden on Poles,” he explained.

Leśkiewicz also stressed that despite Thursday’s veto, the president signed 21 other bills. “That’s really a solid balance, which also shows that the president takes a reasonable approach to the law,” he said.
