During archaeological works carried out at the construction site of the Ełk Południe – Wysokie road junction, an amber necklace made of 35 beads and a heart-shaped pendant has been discovered – informed Karol Głębocki, spokesman of the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) from Olsztyn.
“The work was carried out in connection with the construction of the S61 expressway between Ełk Południe and Wysokie. An exceptional discovery was an amber necklace composed of 35 beads and a heart-shaped pendant,” said Głębocki, adding that apart from the necklace, archaeologists have found coins from the 18th and 19th centuries, elements of clothing and jewellery (pins, buttons, pendants, rings, beads, head ornaments), objects of everyday use, and numerous fragments of ceramic vessels and animal bones.
As archaeologists worked in the former cemetery numerous skeletons and bone fragments were found. “The historical objects are currently undergoing conservation, while the human remains have been submitted for anthropological analysis,” reported Głębocki.
