On Sunday (19 Sep), the 14th Katyn Shadow March, a tribute to over 20,000 Polish citizens murdered by the Soviets in 1940, began at the Museum of the Polish Army in Warsaw.
The march was preceded by a Holy Mass in the Field Cathedral of the Polish Army.
The march is a tribute to nearly 22,000 Polish citizens murdered by the Soviets in 1940 in Katyn and other places of execution in the East. Among the victims of the crime, there were about 15,000 officers of the Polish Army and employees of other uniformed services. The organizers of the 14th Katyn Shadow March are the Institute of National Remembrance and the Historical Group “Zgrupowanie Radosław” (Radosław Group).
“The Katyn March of Shadows has been walking through the streets of Warsaw uninterruptedly every year for fourteen years. In this way, we show the living memory of the murdered Polish officers in Katyn and other places in the East. This march through the heart of the capital in silence and concentration awakens reflection on those who, as soldiers of September 1939, and later prisoners of Soviet camps, did not return to their homes. Those murdered with shots in the back of the head remained in the Katyn pits. This year’s date of the march, postponed by the pandemic from April to September, is part of this year’s celebration of the 82nd anniversary of the Soviet aggression against Poland,” emphasized Jarosław Wróblewski (Historical Group “Zgrupowanie Radosław”), coordinator of the Katyn Shadow March.
The march ended at the Monument to the Fallen and Murdered in the East, at Muranowska Street.
