Robert Kubica ends European Le Mans Series season with the championship title

Sunday’s four-hour race at Portugal’s Algarve International Circuit will end the European Le Mans Series racing season. In the LMP2 class, the Belgian WRT team with Robert Kubica had already secured the title.

Driving the Oreca 07-Gibson Team WRT car with Robert Kubica has already guaranteed victory in the LMP2 class on 19 September when he won the fifth round of the ELMS motor racing at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium.

Before the start in Belgium, the WRT team had an 11-point lead over the most dangerous G-Drive Racing team. However, shortly after the start at Spa, a rival car was damaged in a collision and the team had to withdraw. In this situation, a victory for Kubica’s team would give them the victory in the season’s final classification. The WRT drivers did not waste the chance, they won and were guaranteed the title.

Now they have 36 points ahead of their rivals and even if they would not reach the finish line in Portugal, they still have victory in the series. Throughout the season the team consisted of Kubica, Swiss Louis Deletraz, and Chinese Yifei Ye.

For the 2021 season, Team WRT won the first two races, finished fifth in the third, was fourth in the fourth race held at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza in mid-July, and again at Spa was first.

The European Le Mans Series is an endurance race featuring LMP class prototypes and GT class sports cars. During the competition, competitors share the driving.
