PGNiG, Poland’s state-owned oil and gas company, has said its gas storage facilities are 81 per cent full owing to an increase in deliveries of LNG in recent weeks.
The level of Polish gas reserves has been a source of concern since Russia turned off its gas supply to Poland last week.
“The gas reserves in Polish gas storage facilities are growing, and the current capacity level is at 81 per cent,” PGNiG wrote on Twitter on Wednesday. “This is the result of, among other activities, the increase of LNG deliveries received in recent weeks.”
Between April 25 and May 2, the company received three deliveries of LNG within eight days and thus completed a shipment of LNG purchased on the spot market. On Monday, a methane carrier delivered nearly 70,000 tonnes of LNG from the US, which is approximately 90 million cubic metres of natural gas after regasification.
Since 2015, PGNiG has received 163 deliveries of liquefied natural gas from the gas terminal in Swinoujscie, north-western Poland.
The gas company pointed out that liquefied gas accounts for about one-fourth of its total import volume.
From 2022, the regasification capacity of the Swinoujscie terminal, reserved by PGNiG, will amount to 6.2 billion cubic metres annually, and from 2024 it will increase to 8.3 billion cubic metres annually.
Gas Storage Poland, an entity separate from PGNiG and the operator of gas storage facilities in Poland, has, according to data from end-2021, seven gas storage facilities with a total inventory of 3.18 billion cubic metres of gas, whereas domestic gas consumption is 21.3 million cubic metres.
