International Andrzej Markowski Festival Wratislavia Cantans is one of the most important classical music events in Europe. Mother Nature is the theme for this year’s edition, and it will help us understand how people have viewed nature throughout history. In Wroclaw, the festival will take place from 7-17 September.
Since its inception in 1966, this festival, founded by Andrzej Markowski as an oratorio and cantata festival, has focused on presenting the unique beauty of the human voice. To this day, it continues this tradition, being synonymous with the highest artistic and organisational quality. The magnificent concerts by classical music stars that take place during the festival attract thousands of music lovers every year to the acoustically superb halls of the National Forum of Music in Wrocław and to the historic interiors of Wrocław and several towns in Lower Silesia.
This year’s edition of the festival, entitled “Mother Nature”, was inspired by Joseph Haydn’s Seasons. During the event, we will be looking at the ways in which people have understood nature, related to it and perceived their relationship with it since the dawn of time. The festival will explore both human and cosmic perspectives, seeking the roots of these relationships and drawing on Baroque and folk music. We will also be asking questions about the creation of the world and man’s place in it. This exploration will culminate in the festival’s finale, during which we will listen to stories about the elements.
In each festival concert we will find references to the theme of Mother Nature, which exists in the works of both ancient and contemporary composers. During these events, there will also be the theme of motherhood and its cultural connections to nature – both in a biblical and anthropological context. “Mother Nature” prompts us to ask ourselves questions and, at the same time, allows us to enjoy the joy of music.
The Wratislavia Cantans Festival is not only a unique opportunity to listen to outstanding performers and classical music, but also provides an excellent platform to reflect on our place in the natural world. By combining sounds with themes related to nature, the festival enables us to better understand our relationship with the environment around us.
The National Forum of Music in Wrocław, as the festival’s organiser, has been ensuring the highest artistic and organisational quality of the event for many years. This has earned Wratislavia Cantans a reputation as one of the most important classical music festivals in Europe. Cooperation with eminent artists and inviting talented musicians to participate in the festival make each edition of the event an unforgettable experience for the audience.
