28th Bydgoszcz Opera Festival in Opera NOVA

Opera Nova in Bydgoszcz presents the program of the 28th edition of Bydgoszcz Opera Festival. This year, on October 8-22, the festival will fill the gap caused by pandemic. In line with many years of tradition, the festival will open with the premiere in Opera Nova: for the inauguration, the host chose the opera “Faust” by Charles Gounod which will be staged only for the second time in the 66-year history of the Bydgoszcz music scene.

Opera Nova is a cultural institution co-administrated by Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage & Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship. It realizes artistic activities comprising operas, operettas, ballets and musicals. Its activities also include educational projects, such as introducing opera and ballet to children. The Opera Nova company performs in Bydgoszcz, but also in other opera festivals in Poland and abroad. Since 1989, the ensemble has made numerous tours to Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Malta and Italy.

Every year the ‘Bydgoszcz Opera Festival’ plays host to at least one distinguished foreign company. So far the following companies have appeared here: the A. Makarov Ballet Theatre from St. Petersburg, the National Opera Establishment from Sofia, the Academic Ballet Theatre of the Republic of Belarus from Minsk, the National Opera Establishment of Ukraine from Kiev, the J.K. Tyl Memorial Theatre from Pilsen, the Nationale Theatre from Vilnius, the National Opera Establishment of Latvia from Riga, the Royal Ballet Society of Flanders from Antwerp, Hubbard Street Dance from Chicago, and Cullbergballet from Stockholm, Ballet Theatre du Capitole de Toulouse (France), Danza Contemporanea de Cuba, Béjart Ballet Lausanne.

The organizers of the festival return to the unfulfilled plans from three years ago and want to show performances whose premieres took place at that time: an excellent performance of the Szczecin Opera at the Castle “Process” – a contemporary opera by Philip Glass by Franz Kafka and a comic opera by Józef M.K. Poniatowski’s “Don Desiderio” performed by the Silesian Opera in Bytom. The festival will close with the opera of the Slovak composer Josef B. Forster “Eva”, with which the State Opera from Banska Bystrica (Slovakia) will visit Bydgoszcz again.
