700,000 PLN for a giant rainbow in Warsaw. “Trzaskowski’s priorities”

“Security is more important than ideology. Those in power should get that into their heads,” wrote Mariusz Błaszczak of Law and Justice (PiS) on social media. The politician was reacting to reports that a rainbow – referred to as the “LGBTQ+ arch” – will soon once again appear at Plac Zbawiciela in Warsaw.

In recent days, the project to build a rainbow – a symbol of LGBTQ+ – at Plac Zbawiciela in Warsaw has once again become a topic of public debate. As a reminder, the symbol already stood in that location in the Polish capital between 2012 and 2015. However, public opposition was strong enough that the rainbow disappeared from the square for several years. Now, however, the project to build a new, “damage-resistant” large rainbow won in the 2025 edition of the Civic Budget. It is expected to be completed as early as June this year.

“LGBTQIA+ people often face discrimination in various forms – which causes a sense of rejection by their surroundings, a feeling of not belonging, and pushes them to hide their identity, to pretend to be someone else – ‘normal’ – than who they really are. Affirming the rainbow, displaying LGBTQ+ symbolism in central public spaces openly and boldly – shows that being LGBTQIA+ is not something to be ashamed of, but something normal. Why should anyone be ashamed of being gay if a large rainbow in ‘gay colors’ stands in the central square of Warsaw?” reads the justification for the project published on the website of the Warsaw Civic Budget (bo.um.warszawa.pl).

The cost of the investment was also mentioned. It is expected to amount to as much as 700,000 PLN.

Błaszczak: security is more important than ideology

Mariusz Błaszczak of Law and Justice (PiS) also referred to another “investment” by Rafał Trzaskowski, the mayor of Warsaw, in a post on the platform X.

As he pointed out, by contrast, Trzaskowski has spent a total of… 0 PLN in recent years on building new shelters for Warsaw residents.

“The rainbow at Plac Zbawiciela once sparked controversy and met with strong opposition from residents. Shelters do not spark controversy and face no opposition. Trzaskowski first put up a block at Plac Defilad where he organizes left-wing happenings with taxpayers’ money. Now he is forcing through the installation of a symbol of LGBTQ+ ideology,” Błaszczak wrote.

He emphasized: “Security is more important than ideology. Those in power should get that into their heads.”
