Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced that the government will soon launch a program offering free medications for seniors. Speaking at a family picnic in Skępe, he highlighted the significance of recent social projects, including the successful “800 plus” program aimed at supporting Polish families. The government intends to expand the free medication program to encompass 4,000 different drugs.
Minister of Health Adam Niedzielski confirmed that the proposed legislation for the free medication program is nearly complete. Its implementation date is pending approval by the Council of Ministers. While initially projected to begin on January 1, 2024, alternative scenarios have been considered, with costs estimated for a potential start in September this year. However, the final decision lies with the leadership of the Law and Justice party.
Extensive Coverage and Future Expansion
The current list of medications covered under the existing “75 plus” program includes over 2,000 items. Minister Niedzielski expressed the intention to expand the list to include more than 4,000 drugs, representing the upper limit of all currently reimbursed medications. This expansion aims to provide comprehensive coverage and support to eligible individuals.
