Poland is making significant strides in its nuclear energy aspirations as the government’s representative for strategic energy infrastructure, Anna Łukaszewska-Trzeciakowska, announced that the final elements of the contract with Bechtel and Westinghouse for engineering work on the Pomerania nuclear power plant project will be discussed in the United States next week.
Łukaszewska-Trzeciakowska expressed optimism about obtaining environmental approval for the first Pomerania nuclear power plant later this month. The project’s administrative decisions are crucial, and the government is keen on swift approvals. Geotechnical studies for the nuclear plant site are scheduled to begin in winter. Discussions with Bechtel and Westinghouse for engineering contracts are in advanced stages. Financing, a key aspect, will be discussed with European partners, with a visit to Brussels planned for September.
Poland is learning from the Czech Republic, which has been in talks with the European Commission for three years about its nuclear power project. The intergovernmental contacts will help Poland avoid pitfalls and expedite the process.
Regarding the second nuclear plant under the government’s PPEJ program, Łukaszewska-Trzeciakowska mentioned that analyses are ongoing, with no final decisions on location, format, or partners. Progress will be gradual.
The preferred location for the first Polish nuclear plant is Lubiatowo-Kopalino, with construction scheduled to start in 2026 and the first block operational by 2033. The investment’s estimated value is over PLN 100 billion.
