Proposed Changes in Poland’s Abortion Laws: Overview of Legislative Projects
The Sejm, Poland’s lower house of Parliament, is set to discuss four projects aimed at liberalizing abortion regulations. Led by the Left, two of these projects partially decriminalize abortion and extend its accessibility. Additionally, the Civic Coalition proposes healthcare services for terminating a pregnancy during the first 12 weeks.
The Fourth project, presented by the Third Way coalition, seeks to amend the Family Planning Act and Protection of the Human Fetus, reversing the Constitutional Tribunal’s 2020 ruling. This amendment allows for abortion in cases of severe and irreversible fetal defects or incurable diseases threatening life.
