Gdańsk University students built the solar-powered flying boat “Solar,” competing in the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge and achieving notable success.
Students from Gdańsk University of Technology’s KSTO Korab built a sun-powered hydrofoil named “Solar.” The boat competed in the prestigious Monaco Energy Boat Challenge. Equipped with hydrofoils, “Solar” flies above water, reducing drag, increasing speed, and enhancing maneuverability.
Years of Research and Development
Concept and research began in fall 2017, but construction started in late 2021 due to the pandemic. The project succeeded thanks to academic and external support. Over 20 students contributed, with 11 currently in the core team. Designing the front hydrofoil control system was particularly challenging.
Successful Maiden Voyage and Competition
“Solar” first launched on June 7, piloted by engineer Piotr Pruszko. “Seeing our work lift off the water was amazing,” said Aleksander Longa, KSTO Korab chair. In July, the GUT Solar Boat Team participated in the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge, placing 8th in the Speed Record and 7th in the slalom, finishing 10th overall. The team is now planning the next version of “Solar.”
