Controversy Surrounds Leadership Change at IDEAS NCBR

Professor Piotr Sankowski, a globally recognized AI researcher, has stepped down as head of IDEAS NCBR, a leading research center in artificial intelligence. During the previous government’s term, Sankowski developed the center into a globally respected institution, attracting renowned professors and securing prestigious grants. His unexpected loss in a recent leadership contest has sparked significant debate.

    A “Rigged” Competition?

Former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki claims that the competition for Sankowski’s reappointment was “rigged,” suggesting political favoritism towards a less-qualified opponent. Grzegorz Borowik, the newly appointed head, reportedly has less experience and fewer achievements in AI research, raising questions about the selection criteria.

Sankowski’s departure has caused a ripple effect within the institution, with six members of the scientific council resigning. Many experts fear that the center’s reputation and output will be compromised due to this leadership change, especially given the unclear focus on “commercialization” over research excellence.

    Sankowski’s Public Statement

In a social media statement, Sankowski expressed concern about Poland’s future in research, criticizing the sudden shifts away from successful strategies that discourage top researchers. He urged the government to support global innovation, such as the work being done at IDEAS NCBR, to fuel Poland’s economic growth.
