Poland’s new gas power plant PGE Gryfino Dolna Odra advances energy security and supports renewable integration.
On October 29, 2024, Poland inaugurated its largest and most modern gas power plant, PGE Gryfino Dolna Odra. With a capacity of 1366 MW, this advanced gas-steam power plant can supply over 5% of Poland’s electricity demand. According to Deputy Minister of Climate and Environment, Miłosz Motyka, the new plant represents a key step toward energy security and a cleaner environment.
The plant’s two 683 MW blocks boast efficiency rates over 70% higher than older coal units. Designed for flexibility, the plant can start from a cold state in just four hours or in 30 minutes from a warm state. This quick response allows it to support renewable energy sources, stabilizing the national grid amid the variability of wind and solar energy.
Built to meet stringent emissions standards, PGE Gryfino Dolna Odra minimizes pollutants like sulfur oxides, reducing air pollution in the region. Its carbon intensity stands at around 330 g CO₂ per kWh—nearly three times lower than older coal-fired units.
