Whistleblower Data Breach: Ombudsman Demands Answers from Minister Wieczorek

Poland’s Ombudsman for Civil Rights, Marcin Wiącek, has called on Science and Higher Education Minister Dariusz Wieczorek to explain the mishandling of a whistleblower’s personal data at the University of Szczecin.

Gabriela Fostiak, head of the university’s trade union, reported suspected financial irregularities to the ministry, explicitly requesting whistleblower protection and anonymity. However, reports indicate the ministry dismissed her whistleblower status and forwarded her correspondence, including personal details, to the university’s rector without her consent.

In a December 17 letter, Ombudsman Wiącek requested an explanation for the disclosure and sought copies of relevant communications. He also asked for information on any actions the ministry has taken in response to the alleged irregularities.

Minister Wieczorek defended the decision, arguing that Poland’s whistleblower directive has not yet become law. While he apologized for any distress caused, he ruled out resignation. Opposition lawmakers have since filed a no-confidence motion against him, which will be debated in January.

The incident has ignited political debate and raised concerns about whistleblower protections and governance in Poland’s academic institutions.
