The Sahara Pavilion at the zoo welcomed a heartwarming addition to its animal family this Christmas. A baby donkey, born on December 25th, has joined the herd of domestic donkeys living alongside the camels. The lively little colt, named Brajan by his caretakers, is the offspring of Simona and Pegaz. Described as energetic and playful, Brajan rarely strays far from his mother. Visitors will get the chance to see him outdoors once the weather warms up.
A New Star in the Stable
For now, Brajan spends his days in the pavilion, staying close to the mares, including his mother. He has yet to meet the camels or explore the outdoor enclosure on a regular basis. Born on Christmas Day, Brajan represents a domestic donkey breed (Equus asinus) that has been a faithful companion to humans for millennia.
Domesticated from the African wild donkey over 5,000 years ago, these animals have been widely used as working companions. From carrying loads to pulling carts, donkeys remain vital in many parts of the world.
Donkeys at the Zoo
Brajan’s arrival highlights the diversity of domestic donkey breeds. In addition to Brajan and his family, the zoo also houses long-haired Poitou donkeys, a strikingly different breed originally developed in France. Known for their large size and shaggy coats, Poitou donkeys are among the largest domestic donkey breeds.
This remarkable variety within a single species demonstrates the vast differences that can arise within domesticated animals. Just as dog, cat, or chicken breeds can look drastically different from one another, so too do donkey breeds.
As Brajan continues to grow and explore, visitors can look forward to seeing this spirited young colt thrive and bring joy to the zoo’s Sahara Pavilion. Keep an eye out for Brajan when the spring sun shines!
