Celebrate Wilhelmina Iwanowska, a pioneering Polish astrophysicist, global leader, and 2025 Patron of Toruń.
Wilhelmina Iwanowska (1905–1999), a pioneer of Polish astrophysics, transformed the field by founding new research institutions and inspiring generations of astronomers. Born in Vilnius, she initially pursued mathematics before shifting to astronomy under the mentorship of Prof. Władysław Dziewulski. She became Poland’s first astrophysicist after earning her habilitation following postdoctoral training in Sweden.
Legacy in Toruń and Global Recognition
After WWII, Iwanowska played a key role in establishing Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń and its astronomical observatory in Piwnice. Her dedication led to groundbreaking studies on the Milky Way and interstellar distances. As the first woman in the International Astronomical Union’s leadership, she garnered international acclaim.
A Lifetime of Achievements
Despite offers to work abroad, Iwanowska remained committed to Polish science. She trained 19 doctoral students and influenced contemporary astronomy. Honored with prestigious awards and even a planetoid named after her, her contributions endure.
