On January 28, 2025, Polish President Andrzej Duda met with Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović in Warsaw to discuss regional security, defense spending, and Montenegro’s path to European Union membership. President Duda reaffirmed Poland’s strong support for Montenegro’s EU accession, emphasizing that the country is the most advanced among Western Balkan candidates. He expressed hope that Montenegro’s membership would soon become a reality and encouraged other nations, including Georgia, to return to the path of European integration. Discussions also covered Montenegro’s participation in the Three Seas Initiative, with Duda expressing optimism that by the upcoming summit in April, Montenegro could become an associated member.

Security Cooperation and Historical Remembrance
The two leaders also addressed regional security, with President Duda acknowledging Montenegro’s military presence on NATO’s eastern flank. He commended Montenegro for recognizing the security challenges posed by Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. Additionally, Duda thanked President Milatović for attending the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, highlighting the importance of historical remembrance. Earlier this month, during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Duda also discussed Montenegro’s EU aspirations and regional security with Montenegrin Prime Minister Milojko Spajić.
