“After waiving my immunity, these thugs just want to lock me up. I went to the National Prosecutor’s Office intending to testify. Still, unfortunately, the prosecutor couldn’t find time,” Law and Justice (PiS) MP Dariusz Matecki said on Republika TV shortly after Parliament voted to approve his detention.
The Polish Sejm has authorized the arrest and temporary detention of MP Dariusz Matecki. The politician does not intend to evade law enforcement; in fact, he is awaiting their arrival at the headquarters of Republika TV, where he spoke publicly shortly after the parliamentary vote.
“The justification for my detention is the fear that I might flee, escape the country. After giving up my immunity, these thugs just want to throw me in jail. I went to the National Prosecutor’s Office, I wanted to give my testimony. Unfortunately, the prosecutor did not have time for me,” Matecki reiterated.
Matecki read aloud a fragment from a letter written by his lawyer, Kacper Stukan:
“In connection with MP Dariusz Matecki’s waiver of immunity and the Polish Sejm’s approval of his detention and temporary arrest, I kindly request a date to interrogate Dariusz Matecki as a suspect. I propose March 7, 2025, at 9:00 AM. I confirm that Dariusz Matecki will appear personally at the prosecutor’s office.”
“Officials from the Ministry of Justice who were recently released from custody have no contact restrictions with me. What’s the deal? Currently, no one is jailed in this case,” Matecki emphasized.
“If they want to charge me, go ahead. I’ll go to court and show how absurd these charges are,” he declared.
Matecki also acknowledged that four out of six charges against him are based on speculation by Tomasz Mraz.
“They’re based on the words of a person who could be lying, whose words Roman Giertych, as his lawyer, can shape freely and suggest what Mraz should say. And now he’s voting for my detention,” Matecki concluded.
