Is the opposition able to risk the security of the country? Prof. Legutko directly: Yes, to hit the government

    – The opposition can risk the security of the country to hit the government. Lukashenka would have been a complete fool not to try to take advantage of it,” said Law and Justice MEP Professor Ryszard Legutko. In his opinion, the state of emergency at the border is a rational solution, and “the action of the opposition causes a threat to the security of the state, not only in this issue but in many others.”

The state must protect itself from external aggression, and this role is fulfilled by our services.”

     – assessed Law and Justice MEP Professor Ryszard Legutko on Friday in Polish Radio 24, asked about the issue of the state of emergency at the border with Belarus. “All the human tragedies that are happening there are happening because some people are being set up, running away from the Polish services. I don’t know of any case of Polish services harming someone – a fugitive they caught. The services are not letting these people into the European Union, and that is a very good thing,” said Prof. Legutko. In his opinion, the introduction of a state of emergency on the Belarusian border is a rational action.

The MEP added that in his opinion “such a struggle will continue for some time, especially that Lukashenka and his supporters see that there is a weak link in Poland, namely the opposition, which is trying to force concessions from the Polish government at all costs. “Since it is clear that the opposition is a weak link, well, Lukashenko would have to be a complete fool not to keep trying,” he assessed.

Prof. Legutko also said that “the opposition is mainly occupied with fighting the government in all possible ways, while it does not deal with the issue of the state”.

“I even think it’s willing to risk state security just to placate the government,” he said

     – he added. When asked if this was a charge of “high treason,” he countered that he would not retract his words.

In his opinion, “the action of the opposition causes a threat to the security of the state, not only in this issue but also in many others.”

“The opposition, in the case of a conflict between the Polish state and external entities, always, but always, takes the side of the external entity, but never takes the side of the government. This is pathological behaviour. We are living in very difficult times, and there needs to be some consolidation, especially on security.”

     – said the MEP.

“The opposition has let go of all the brakes – they don’t know when to stop, or even don’t want to stop. The cleverer players such as Donald Tusk or the EU establishment, who would also like to topple the Polish government, in such situations try not to go too far, while the opposition runs amok

     – Legutko added.

When asked about the leader of the Civic Platform, Donald Tusk, Prof. Legutko said that he “considers him to be a completely cynical person, but as a politician he is efficient”. “He undoubtedly wants to destabilize the situation in the country, while he cannot do it so ostentatiously and harmonize with the policy of Lukashenko and his principals,” he added.

Since 2 September, in the border zone with Belarus – in 183 towns of Podlaskie and Lubelskie Voivodeships – the state of emergency has been in force. It was introduced for 30 days by a decree of President Andrzej Duda, issued at the request of the Council of Ministers. On Thursday, the Diet agreed to extend the state of emergency by 60 days.
