Maria Zając, a student of the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, established the probable origin of the 15th-century painting “Mother of God with Child with a Rose”. The Gothic painting, framed with 38 most valuable relics, is kept on a daily basis in the treasury of St. Mary’s Basilica in Krakow.
“Mother of God with the Child with a Rose” is a work that was created in the 15th century. Until now, it was not known where it was created. To this day, it is not known how exactly and when it got to St. Mary’s Basilica in Kraków. Documents about this painting have not survived in the temple, and individual mentions could only be found in the professional literature.
The student, now a graduate of the Faculty of Conservation and Restoration of Works of Art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, managed to establish the most likely origin of the object.
“The painting has features that show that it was created in a Krakow workshop operating on the border of the Kingdom of Poland and the Kingdom of Hungary in the 15th century. It is the workshop of the retable master from Maciejowice (these days the territory of Slovakia). I want to emphasize that these are assumptions,” Maria Zając told Polish Press Agency.
