Another meeting between Prime Minister Donald Tusk and his parliamentary colleagues took place last night at the Chancellery. However, according to media reports, the Prime Minister was not in the best of moods following Rafał Trzaskowski’s electoral defeat. He is said to have lamented the fact that there are now more of “them”—referring to right-wing supporters.
In the second round of the presidential election, Karol Nawrocki emerged victorious with 50.89% of the vote. His opponent, Rafał Trzaskowski, despite early euphoria on election night following the release of exit poll results, ultimately had to come to terms with his loss.
It was this defeat that reportedly became the main focus of yesterday’s meeting of Donald Tusk’s coalition members. In a somewhat surprising move, the German-Swiss outlet Onet.pl revealed the rather somber tone behind the scenes of the KO parliamentary gathering.
Behind the Scenes: Tusk in Low Spirits
While Trzaskowski was allegedly greeted with “thunderous applause” from his party colleagues, Donald Tusk himself appeared far less enthusiastic.
“Rafał was received very warmly. Everyone wanted to recognize the tremendous effort he had put into the campaign. Over the past few months, he has grown significantly closer to our party structures across the country. This may be the first time since he became a prominent figure in the Civic Platform that he has been so deeply engaged,” the report reads.
The leader of the 13 December coalition is said to have expressed concern that “they”—right-wing supporters—currently outnumber their own. He reportedly admitted that the 2025 presidential election was “difficult to win.”
“Tusk did not dwell on the defeat. He argued that the presidential race had been extremely hard to win. He allegedly remarked that there are simply more of ‘them’ now, and that the nature of this type of election requires securing over half the votes to succeed—unlike parliamentary elections,” the article continues.
Algorithms Against Us
Yet this was not Tusk’s only grievance. He also pointed to issues in the digital sphere, claiming that “the algorithms were not working in our favor.”
What Topic Did Tusk Avoid?
According to one Onet source who attended the meeting, Tusk deliberately avoided one key issue in the context of Trzaskowski’s loss: the mistakes made by his campaign team.
“Donald clearly wants to move on to the next stage. But to do so, he had to reassure the ranks—to keep people from drifting away, even if they are currently fearful or frustrated. As a result, no mention was made of the campaign team’s mistakes. Perhaps because doing so would have opened a Pandora’s box,” the report states.
