“Accepting This Agreement Is a Catastrophe”: President Slams Mercosur Deal and Tusk, Calls for Action Instead of Rhetoric

President Karol Nawrocki has once again voiced strong opposition to the EU trade agreement with the Mercosur countries. In a post published on X, he left no room for doubt: the agreement threatens to flood the Polish market with low-quality food, destroy domestic agriculture, and weaken food security. “The proposed safeguard clauses are like putting up a windbreak in front of a tsunami,” the President assessed.

From the very beginning of his presidency, Karol Nawrocki has consistently opposed the EU-Mercosur agreement. As he recalled in his post, the deal is global in scope and covers thousands of products that could enter European markets on a massive scale. In the President’s view, this would amount to unfair competition for Polish farmers and businesses, as well as a real threat to food quality.

“From the outset, I have been saying a firm ‘NO’ to the EU-Mercosur agreement,”

Nawrocki emphasized, noting that the defense of Polish agriculture was included in his legislative initiative submitted as early as August 2025.

The President also reminded readers that he has raised the issue internationally. He spoke about the risks stemming from the agreement in Paris during a meeting with President Emmanuel Macron, in Italy in talks with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and in Berlin in a conversation with Chancellor Friedrich Merz. He also presented geopolitical arguments and concerns regarding the use of Russian agricultural production inputs in South American countries during a lecture at Charles University in Prague.

As it has been repeatedly emphasized, the problem with the Mercosur agreement is not limited to economic issues but also concerns production standards.

“It is unacceptable to import food produced using substances banned in the EU for 20 years, harmful to the health of Poles,” the President stressed. In his view, food security should be based on production close to the consumer, not on importing food from distances of up to 10,000 kilometers.

Nawrocki also pointed to a mistake the European Union had previously made in its trade relations with China. “Concluding trade agreements for products manufactured in Poland and Europe is a mistake – it means unfair competition and lower quality,” he assessed, warning that this time the victims would be Polish farmers and entrepreneurs.

The President was also critical of the government’s actions. He recalled that until 2023, there had been a blocking minority in the EU opposing the Mercosur agreement. “The recent period, including during the Polish presidency, saw this squandered. Now you are celebrating clauses that are an illusion,” he wrote.

In strong words, he also addressed the Prime Minister directly:

“Prime Minister, we need to build a blocking minority, not talk!”

According to Karol Nawrocki, accepting the Mercosur agreement would mean a catastrophe for Polish agriculture and a long-term threat to the country’s food security.
