Adam Bielan: German Chancellors at Gazprom Undermine European Solidarity

A special statement session is taking place in the European Parliament, dedicated to solidarity with Poland after the deliberate violation of Polish airspace by Russian drones. Among those who spoke was Adam Bielan from Law and Justice (PiS). He did not mince words and pointed out who enabled Russia’s current provocations. “The policies of Obama and, unfortunately, Biden encouraged Putin to aggression, while the policies of Schroeder and Merkel gave him the money for it,” Bielan thundered.

Adam Bielan recalled the warnings once issued by the late President of Poland, Lech Kaczyński. He stated that “Russian drones over Poland may already be the last warning sign – a sign that the policy towards Putin’s Russia, based on constant attempts to reach an agreement with him, has come to an end.”

Putin understands only the language of force, and every behavior which in our Western understanding is a sign of reason and compromise, for him is a sign of weakness and an encouragement to further aggression. Unfortunately, when the late Polish president Lech Kaczyński said in Tbilisi in 2008 that Russian aggression against Georgia was the prelude to further ones, the West pretended not to understand! – the MEP reminded.

Bielan showed no mercy towards Germany’s policy, pursued by successive chancellors for over 20 years.

Mrs. Merkel and successive German governments, regardless of party colors, promoted the Nord Stream projects. The economic miracle of many European economies did not rest on hard work, but on cheap Russian energy. As long as German chancellors find employment at Gazprom, it is hard to believe in European solidarity. The policies of Obama and, unfortunately, Biden encouraged Putin to aggression, while the policies of Schroeder and Merkel gave him the money for it. The only European solidarity we can believe in is solidarity based on the understanding that we are not only talking about values, but that we are ready to defend them, Bielan reminded.
