Alcohol Ban in the Sejm Sparks Clash: Matecki Challenges the Left

“Well, there you go. It’s that simple,” Anna Maria Żukowska praised Włodzimierz Czarzasty’s decision to ban alcohol sales in the Sejm. Her post was countered with an uncomfortable question from Dariusz Matecki. “Great that you’re against alcohol. Have you expelled that degenerate from your caucus?” the Law and Justice politician asked, recalling the infamous five minutes of Left senator Maciej Kopiec.

Speaker of the Sejm Włodzimierz Czarzasty signed an order banning the sale of alcoholic beverages in buildings and on premises administered by the Chancellery of the Sejm. “It’s hard to inform society about the necessity of banning alcohol sales at gas stations, about the necessity of banning nighttime alcohol sales, while not setting an example from the Sejm – meaning from the people who will be passing such laws,” he explained.

“I believe that as a state institution, we should set an example, which is why I signed this order,”

Czarzasty added.

Anna Maria Żukowska also praised her leader’s decision. “Well, there you go. It’s that simple,” the Left MP remarked.

Among the supportive comments under Żukowska’s post, a troublesome remark was added by a PiS MP.

“Great that you’re against alcohol. Have you expelled that degenerate from your club?” he asked. He reminded readers of an incident from February of this year involving Maciej Kopiec, a Left senator who was recorded in a Sejm bar.

“Sleep, you f**king criminal. Come on, sleep, you f**king wh***,” were the words Senator Kopiec directed at PiS and Confederation politicians. In the video circulating on social media, the politician can be seen smoking a cigarette. Later, from the Sejm rostrum, Dariusz Matecki (PiS) accused Kopiec of being “completely drunk or on drugs.”

In recent weeks, the debate about alcohol in the context of parliament resurfaced after remarks by the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Stefan Krajewski. The Polish People’s Party politician complained about constant parties in the Sejm hotel, supposedly initiated by “patho-MPs.”

The history of drunk MPs is as old as the Third Republic. Since the first parliamentary terms, the media have shown numerous embarrassing incidents involving politicians from all sides of the political spectrum.
