The Trailblazing Miss Polonia Who Brought Hope to Post-War Poland

Alicja Schilder, née Bobrowska — a woman whose incredible life story is as inspiring as it is multifaceted. Born in 1936 on January 8th in Włodzimierz, she made history in 1957 as the first Miss Polonia crowned after World War II. Her win was a beacon of hope in post-war Poland, and a year later, she represented her country at the Miss Universe pageant in the U.S., where she placed in the top five and won recognition for delivering the best speech about her homeland. Her charm and poise put Poland back on the global map during a time of recovery.

From Global Stardom to a Life of Purpose and Dedication

Despite enticing offers, including a deal with Max Factor and a chance to star alongside Marlon Brando, Alicja chose to return home, staying true to her roots. She found a new calling on the stage, performing at theatres in Kraków and Warsaw, and even tried her hand as a TV presenter for a brief time. In 1981, she moved to California, where she dedicated nearly two decades to working as a nurse and volunteering in intensive care, showing the same grace and dedication she had displayed throughout her life.

Embracing Art and Reinvention in Her Golden Years

After retiring, Alicja discovered her passion for art, creating striking paintings and sculptures in a unique 3D style. Her work has been showcased in galleries across the U.S., from California to New York. Whether it was on a stage, in a hospital, or in front of a canvas, she poured her heart into everything she did, constantly reinventing herself while staying grounded in her values.
