This scandal has shaken the European Union. According to Belgian investigators, some members of the European Parliament, including its deputy speaker Eva Kaili, allegedly accepted bribes from representatives of Qatar and Morocco in exchange for promoting the interests of these countries in Brussels. The case is ongoing (so far investigators have secured more than €1.5 million in cash). One of the threads of the scandal is the activities of Abderrahim Atmoun, the Moroccan ambassador to Poland. The diplomat, together with Moroccan intelligence, allegedly corrupted some MEPs in order to get the European Union to recognise the Western Sahara area as an integral part of his country. According to the findings of the ‘GP’, he lobbied intensively in this regard also in Poland. Not only did he convince Polish companies to invest in the disputed region, but he also led the Polish Senate, led by Speaker Tomasz Grodzki, a Civic Platform senator, to become involved in strengthening Polish-Moroccan relations. “Gazeta Polska” reveals the behind-the-scenes relations of a diplomat suspected of corruption and intelligence activities in the European Parliament with Polish senators.
