The main reasons behind the company’s decision include a declining number of orders, rising operating costs, and decreasing workplace safety. The Królewska Steelworks in Chorzów, Silesia Voivodeship, which produces mining profiles and railway accessories, will become history in December this year. Production will be transferred to other plants within the company. Some employees will also find employment in other locations.
The issue of the steelworks’ closure was reported by the WNP.pl portal.
ArcelorMittal Poland has announced its decision to halt operations and permanently shut down production at the Królewska Steelworks in Chorzów. The company intends to make every effort to offer jobs in its remaining branches. In total, this concerns 270 people.
“Long-standing, experienced employees are the backbone of our company, which is why we want them to continue working within our structures,” emphasizes Stanisław Ból, HR Director of ArcelorMittal Poland.
“In the coming weeks, we will meet with them individually to discuss possibilities and mutual expectations. We will also propose other solutions, which we will agree upon with our social partners,”
he adds.
The current Królewska Steelworks is essentially what remains of the Kościuszko Steelworks, once a large industrial complex. The Königshütte plant – today the Królewska Steelworks – began operations in 1802 and grew gradually until the 1970s, when its last modernization took place.
Later, a gradual shutdown of the plant’s departments began. The main reason for the downsizing of the steelworks was environmental protection requirements. Three blast furnaces, among other facilities, were shut down.
Wojciech Koszuta, President of the Management Board and General Director of ArcelorMittal Poland, comments on the closure:
“We are aware that this marks the end of an important chapter for the employees and for those emotionally connected to the steelworks. As a company, we have taken many steps in recent years to maintain production at this site, but a combination of several negative external factors undermined our efforts. I would like to thank the employees of the Królewska Steelworks for their diligence, dedication, and hard work, and to assure them that anyone who wishes to continue working at ArcelorMittal Poland will find a place in our company.”
