The Tatra Volunteer Search and Rescue (TOPR) has raised the avalanche risk in the Tatra Mountains to a moderate level (Level 2). Snow accumulation is significant, with 65 cm on Kasprowy Wierch and 74 cm in the Valley of Five Polish Lakes. Current conditions are highly unfavorable for tourism in the region.
“Strong winds combined with substantial snowfall have sharply worsened the avalanche situation,” TOPR warns. Fresh wind-deposited snow in concave formations and extensive snowfields, especially above the tree line, are particularly hazardous.
The Tatra National Park authorities emphasize that high-altitude trails are heavily snowed under and obscured, making navigation difficult. Deep drifts, snow overhangs on ridges, low cloud cover, and fog further complicate conditions, increasing the risk of getting lost. On summits, strong, gusty winds exacerbate the cold, creating dangerous conditions for hikers.
Tourists are advised to exercise extreme caution and reconsider trips to the Tatras during this period.
