“Disarming Poland and a Political Standoff with the President.” PiS MP Calls for Inquiry into Defence Minister’s Decisions

Prime Minister Donald Tusk is using Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz to implement policies that are, in the opposition’s view, extremely dangerous for Poland, Piotr Kaleta, a Law and Justice (PiS) MP and member of the parliamentary National Defence Committee, told Niezalezna.pl. Kaleta argued that a future parliamentary inquiry should examine several of the minister’s decisions, including the transfer of Patriot interceptor missiles to Ukraine.

Patriot Missile Transfer Confirmed

Reports recently emerged that Poland had transferred part of its stockpile of PAC-3 MSE interceptors—the most advanced missiles used by the Patriot air defence system—to Ukraine.

On Monday, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed the reports, stating that Poland had indeed delivered a package of the missiles.

He said the transfer was made “at the request of the NATO Secretary General, U.S. European Command, and the commander of U.S. and allied forces in Europe,” adding that the number of missiles transferred represented “only a marginal portion of Poland’s capabilities.”

Notably, at the end of March this year, Kosiniak-Kamysz had publicly assured that Patriot systems and their armament would remain in Poland to protect NATO’s eastern flank.

“Our Patriot batteries and their armament serve to protect Polish airspace and NATO’s eastern flank. Nothing is changing in this regard, and we are not planning to relocate them anywhere,” he wrote on X at the time.

Bosak Demands Full Disclosure

Deputy Speaker of the Sejm Krzysztof Bosak also commented on the issue.

“We still have no information about the military equipment transferred to Ukraine. Yesterday, the leadership of the Ministry of National Defence presented nothing that we did not already know. Yesterday, I also submitted a motion requesting an extraordinary session of the Sejm, and we expect Parliament to receive full information on this matter.”

Dispute Between the Government and the President

The controversy intensified after Kosiniak-Kamysz suggested that President Karol Nawrocki had been informed about the transfers.

On X, the defence minister wrote:

“The President’s entourage is lying when it claims that President Nawrocki had no knowledge of the equipment transferred to Ukraine. The matter was discussed during meetings of the Government Security Committee attended by a representative of the National Security Bureau on February 10, February 17, and March 24, 2026.”

He added that the Head of the Presidential Chancellery had also been informed and that the President himself had discussed the issue with the NATO Secretary General.

President Nawrocki quickly rejected the claim.

“You made the decision. Face it like a man,”

the President responded to the defence minister.

Strategic Importance of the Missiles

The issue carries significant strategic importance because the PAC-3 MSE (Patriot Advanced Capability-3 Missile Segment Enhancement) is currently the most advanced interceptor missile used by the Patriot air and missile defence system.

The procurement cost for the U.S. military is estimated at approximately $4.2 million to $5.3 million per missile, while the price for foreign customers such as Poland can reach around $7 million per interceptor.

“Tusk’s Political Buffer”

Commenting on the controversy, Piotr Kaleta told Niezalezna.pl:

“The defence minister has repeatedly demonstrated that he has only a vague understanding of issues crucial to Poland’s security, and this is yet another confirmation of that. With such a defence minister, Poles certainly have no reason to feel safe.”

Kaleta argued that Prime Minister Donald Tusk had repeatedly entrusted Kosiniak-Kamysz with implementing politically controversial decisions.

“It is worth noting one important thing: Donald Tusk uses Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz to carry out actions that are extremely dangerous for Poland. During their previous government it was raising the retirement age; more recently it was the SAFE agreements and last-minute deals drafted in haste; and now we have the issue of the Patriot missiles transferred to Ukraine. Decisions of this kind weaken our country in many crucial respects. Yet Kosiniak-Kamysz participates in all of this. Why wasn’t the Prime Minister signing these decisions himself? It is clear that the PSL leader does not consider the political consequences—he simply agrees to everything.”

Kaleta added:

“I have no doubt that in the future a parliamentary commission of inquiry will have to be established to investigate these matters.”

“A Threat to Poland’s Security”

The PiS lawmaker also commented on the prolonged dispute between the government and the President over defence matters.

“One does not have to be an expert in politics or defence to conclude that the standoff between the government and the President directly undermines Poland’s security. Putin and our adversaries can clearly see that the President, as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, is not informed about key decisions concerning national defence and security. He is either bypassed or receives only fragmentary information. What the defence minister is doing is sheer recklessness that threatens the security of all of us”

Kaleta concluded.
