Backlash over Przegląd column: Tomasz Jastrun criticized for extreme remarks about Gazeta Polska readers and authors

Tomasz Jastrun, a columnist for the weekly Przegląd, claims that journalists of Gazeta Polska and its readers should be killed. Such an article appeared both in print and online. “With the authors of Gazeta Polska, just like with its readers, it is no longer possible to discuss anything; there is no common ground for debate, only a beating or simply murder remains,” we read in the April 27 issue.

Tomasz Jastrun is a Polish poet and journalist, for many years associated with the weekly Polityka. He now writes columns for Przegląd. In the article published on April 27, Jastrun attacks and threatens both the journalists of Gazeta Polska and its readers.

According to the author, the entire Gazeta Polska milieu should be killed.

Gazeta Polska gives the impression of a publication driven mad by hatred of Tusk and of people with liberal views,”

Jastrun states in his column.

“With the authors of Gazeta Polska, just like with its readers, it is no longer possible to discuss anything; there is no common ground for polemics, only a beating or simply murder remains,”

the author added.

Journalist Krzysztof Ziemiec raises a valid question: “Where was the editor in charge of the issue, where?”

This is not the first time Jastrun has expressed contempt toward right-wing circles. In the past, he has repeatedly voiced strong criticism of the governments of Law and Justice. Some commentators have accused him of participating in the so-called “industry of contempt” and of crossing the boundaries of public debate in his writings.

His anti-right-wing and anti-clerical statements come as little surprise if one considers his background. The writer’s father, also a poet, had a communist past and was related to Luna Brystygier, a figure associated with the Stalinist apparatus of repression.
