Bąkiewicz severely beaten by German police, leaves Berlin hospital in the middle of the night

Robert Bąkiewicz, leader of the Border Defence Movement (ROG), who was beaten by German police officers in Berlin, was taken to a Berlin hospital, where he underwent medical examinations. “At around 2 a.m., he was released from the military hospital, and we received information that he had left for Poland,” Janusz Życzkowski reported on TV Republika.

On Tuesday in Berlin, activists from the Border Defence Movement (ROG) were beaten and handcuffed by German police when they attempted to place a cross by a boulder commemorating Polish victims of the Second World War. Berlin police prevented them from doing so, and after several dozen minutes of negotiations and after the activists had sung Rota, they brutally attacked them. Some of those present were taken to hospital.

Among them was Robert Bąkiewicz, the severely beaten leader of the Border Defence Movement. Today, Janusz Życzkowski, a reporter for TV Republika, said that Bąkiewicz had left the Berlin hospital during the night.

“Late in the evening, I spoke with Robert Bąkiewicz while he was still in hospital, and information was being passed on by Bąkiewicz’s associates that he did not want to stay there, but that he would probably have to. However, at around 2 a.m., he was released from the military hospital, and we received information that he had left for Poland. He will also undergo a medical check-up in Poland. We can probably expect a statement on what happened yesterday,”

Życzkowski said.

“My father, together with Jacek Pawłowicz and Paweł Kryszczak, is in hospital. They are in very bad condition. My father probably has broken ribs. Jacek Pawłowicz also has a concussion. Paweł is badly bruised all over,” Blanka Bąkiewicz, the daughter of the Border Defence Movement leader, said yesterday outside the German embassy in Warsaw.

Shortly afterwards, TV Republika connected with Janusz Życzkowski, who was in Berlin outside the hospital to which Bąkiewicz had been taken.

“Robert has already received medication and is lying on an IV drip. He has been severely beaten and has problems with his spine and head. He cannot get out of bed. He was taken to a military hospital and is receiving professional care here,”

said Łukasz, a Pole living in Berlin.
