Candidate for U.S. Ambassador Pays Tribute to the Insurgents. Moving Statement by Tom Rose on the Warsaw Uprising

On the 81st anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising, Tom Rose, nominee for U.S. ambassador to Poland, published a moving post in Polish in which he paid tribute to the heroes of the uprising. In his message, he highlighted facts crucial to Polish historical memory, including the inaction of the Red Army.

On August 1, 2025, at the symbolic “W” hour, Tom Rose—nominated by President Donald Trump to serve as the United States ambassador in Warsaw—posted on platform X to commemorate one of the most significant and tragic events in Poland’s history. He began his message with a modest disclaimer: “I don’t speak Polish — please forgive any translation errors.”

In the rest of the post, Rose emphasized the heroic struggle of the Polish people:

“Eighty-one years ago, on August 1, 1944, at ‘W’ hour, tens of thousands of young, brave Polish resistance fighters launched the heroic Warsaw Uprising — the largest underground armed resistance against Nazi Germany during World War II.”

The ambassadorial candidate did not omit the dramatic international context in which the fighting took place. He pointed out the isolation of the insurgents and the passivity of Soviet forces:

“They held out longer than anyone thought possible — with no outside help, surrounded by destruction, while the Red Army waited on the other side of the Vistula.”

This passage drew particular attention from commenters, as it reflected an understanding of the Polish historical perspective — one often overlooked in international narratives.

Tom Rose, known for his conservative views and pro-Israel stance, is a former adviser to Vice President Mike Pence and a former publisher of The Jerusalem Post. He had previously commented on issues related to Poland, including refuting false claims about the alleged involvement of the Polish Underground State in suppressing the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.

In his post on the Warsaw Uprising, Rose captured its timeless significance:

“The significance of the Uprising — its extraordinary courage, immense cost, and historical legacy — remains a subject of debate to this day. But its spirit is undeniable.”

He stressed that it was:

“the spirit of defiance, sacrifice, and an unbreakable will to be free.”

He ended his tribute with a call for global remembrance and homage to the heroes:

“Today Poland remembers. And the world must remember, too. Honor and glory to the heroes.”
