Cenckiewicz Warns of ‘Psychological-Propaganda War’ After SAFE Veto

“This is irresponsible, unserious, and harmful,” said the head of the National Security Bureau, Sławomir Cenckiewicz, emphasizing that the government had been pressuring President Karol Nawrocki to sign the law concerning SAFE. It turned out otherwise; the bill was vetoed, and Cenckiewicz states openly that he expects a psychological-propaganda campaign waged by the governing camp against the head of state.

President Karol Nawrocki announced in a Thursday address that he would not sign the law concerning the EU SAFE loan.

“The SAFE mechanism is an enormous foreign loan, taken out for 45 years in a foreign currency, whose interest costs may reach as much as PLN 180 billion. Poles would therefore have to repay an amount equal to the value of the loan itself, while Western banks and financial institutions would profit from it. It can be compared to Swiss-franc loans. Everything was supposed to be safe, but then the installments rose so much that it led to severe financial crises,”

the president said.

In an interview with TV Republika, the head of the National Security Bureau, Sławomir Cenckiewicz, pointed out that there had been no reliable debate on the SAFE issue. As he admitted, on some topics, there are moments of substantive discussion during off-camera talks, but “that is not a public debate.”

And what was it like in the case of the EU loan?

“Madness, pressure, extraordinary emotions. Even today, the prime minister framed the SAFE issue in such a way that if we do not take out the loans, we will essentially be defenseless. That is irresponsible, unserious, and harmful,”

Cenckiewicz stated.

The head of the BBN admitted that “pressure was exerted on the president to sign a pig in a poke.”

“What do you expect?” asked the program host Katarzyna Gójska.

“War,” Cenckiewicz replied, clarifying: “A psychological-propaganda war against the president.”
