Prime Minister Donald Tusk has announced a reduction in fuel prices—and in an exceptionally rapid manner. “The key question is why he has only woken up now, just before the end of the Sejm session. What exactly has happened?” asked Law and Justice’s candidate for prime minister, Przemysław Czarnek. While he assessed the proposal positively, he argued that it was being introduced too late.
Prime Minister Tusk stated that an extraordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers would take place today at 6:00 p.m., during which the government is to make decisions on lowering fuel prices. Meanwhile, the Speaker of the Sejm, Włodzimierz Czarzasty, announced that the government’s proposed measures—reducing excise duty and VAT on fuel—would be debated in the Sejm on Thursday from 8:30 p.m. A formal decision on this is expected to be taken by the Council of Seniors, which is to expand the agenda of the current parliamentary session.
Several weeks ago, politicians from Law and Justice had already called for fuel price reductions. Today, the party’s candidate for prime minister, Przemysław Czarnek, returned to the issue during a press conference.
“The fundamental question is why he has only woken up now, just before the end of the Sejm session. What has happened? What is Tusk trying to cover up? Who forced him—fortunately—to make this move to lower fuel prices for Poles? Because it is hardly coincidental that this is happening at 6:00 p.m., a day before the session ends,” Czarnek asked.
“We need to reduce costs for farmers,” said the PiS candidate for prime minister, adding that he is also demanding VAT refunds on fuel for farmers. “Farmers are waiting; farmers are being exploited, because they are the ones who spend the most on fuel,” he stressed.
“What scandal are you trying to cover up, Tusk? A scandal involving public finances, an unprecedented budget deficit; the scandal that in February alone 7 billion złoty less was collected than should have been—or perhaps the scandal the whole of Poland is talking about, from Lower Silesia?” the Law and Justice MP asked.
