A Warsaw court has ordered a three-month detention for 43-year-old Andrzej K., the driver of a delivery van who struck a 14-year-old boy on a pedestrian crossing in Wola, Warsaw, on Friday evening. The victim, a Ukrainian national, later died in hospital. According to the prosecutor’s office, the suspect fled the scene without rendering aid.
Two Charges Filed
Andrzej K. faces two charges: causing a fatal traffic accident and fleeing the scene, as well as driving despite a court-imposed ban. Prosecutors argued for his detention due to concerns about possible interference with the investigation, the risk of him hiding, and the severity of the potential penalty.
Previous Offenses and Arrest
The suspect has prior convictions, including drug possession and assisting foreigners in crossing borders illegally. At the time of his arrest on Saturday evening, Andrzej K. reportedly had nearly two promiles of alcohol in his system. Investigations suggest he hid the van on the outskirts of Warsaw and consumed significant amounts of alcohol with a relative afterward.
Driver’s Account
While he has admitted to driving despite a ban, Andrzej K. claimed he was not aware he had hit anyone. According to prosecutors, the vehicle’s mirror—mounted relatively high—was damaged in the collision, but the windshield was not broken. He allegedly only realized something serious might have happened when he saw multiple police lights in the area.
Delivery Contractor Involved
It has been confirmed that the suspect worked for a subcontractor of UPS. A representative of UPS stated that they expect their independent service partners to follow all laws and regulations, and that they are cooperating with authorities in the ongoing investigation.
The tragic incident occurred near the intersection of Ordona and Jana Kazimierza streets. The 14-year-old victim was transported to hospital but did not survive his injuries.
