“We view with disapproval the first public statement made by Waldemar Żurek as Minister of Justice, which contained language that bears the hallmarks of threats against members of the political opposition,” wrote prosecutors from the Independent Association of Prosecutors Ad Vocem in an official statement.
Waldemar Żurek’s first public statement as Minister of Justice stirred considerable emotion.
Prosecutors from the Ad Vocem association emphasized that it included “language that bears the hallmarks of threats against members of the political opposition.”
They stated that such remarks should also be interpreted as referring to independent judges, prosecutors, and all citizens who do not accept the violation of the Constitution and laws enacted by the Parliament of the Republic of Poland, where there is no place for the ideology of “militant democracy”. Statements of this nature-especially from someone assuming oversight of the prosecution service-must be regarded as unacceptable and incompatible with the principles of a democratic state governed by the rule of law, they wrote in the statement.
They reminded the public that the Minister of Justice is obligated to “maintain impartiality, restraint, and respect for the constitutional principles guiding public authority.” They stressed that “it is unacceptable to use this position to intimidate political opponents, suggest retaliation, or interfere with the independence of law enforcement and the judiciary.”
They called on the President and the Ombudsman to examine the minister’s statement and urged the legal community and the general public to express “active opposition to all manifestations of abuse of power.”
A Minister for Battle?
The Association of Judges Themis (Stowarzyszenie Sędziów Themis), in which Żurek has held leadership roles for years, wrote that by nominating the new Minister of Justice, Tusk had “chosen a fighter who will take on the battle against PiS and President Nawrocki.”
After attention was drawn to this social media post, its content disappeared from the X platform.
