During a meeting today in the Oval Office with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, the U.S. President Donald Trump highlighted Poland’s extraordinary commitment to defense spending within NATO.
Reflecting on his initial experiences with NATO meetings, Trump recalled that few member states were fulfilling their obligation to spend 2 percent of their GDP on defense. He notably singled out Poland for praise, stating, “Poland was spending even more than required—it was exceptional in this regard. That made a big impression on me.”
Trump emphasized that his insistence on fair contributions led to substantial increases in defense spending among NATO allies, strengthening the Alliance significantly. “Hundreds of billions of dollars started flowing into NATO,” he noted, stressing that it was unfair for the U.S. to shoulder a disproportionate share of defense costs.
The president previously described Poland as “one of the most reliable allies,” reaffirming the importance of defense spending as crucial to fostering stronger bilateral ties.
