Dramatic Road Safety Statistics in Poland: One Figure Is Particularly Alarming

Preliminary data show that last year there were 21,000 traffic accidents on Polish roads; more than 1,600 people were killed and over 24,700 were injured. The numbers of accidents, fatalities, and injured persons were lower than in 2024. In 2025, however, a higher number of intoxicated drivers were detected.

“Preliminarily, we closed the year with a balance of 21,000 accidents, 1,651 fatalities, and 24,715 injured persons,” said major Robert Opas from the Traffic Bureau of the National Police Headquarters (KGP). He added that compared with 2024, there were 519 fewer accidents, 245 fewer fatalities, and 67 fewer injured.

Police recorded 95,262 intoxicated drivers. This represents an increase of 2,938 detected intoxicated drivers, but with a significantly higher number of alcohol tests conducted. In 2025, 17,902,284 such tests were carried out, compared with 16,038,095 in 2024.

Nevertheless, nearly 100,000 drunk drivers on the roads in a single year is a dramatic and shocking statistic, showing how serious the problem of such irresponsible drivers is in Poland.

“It should be remembered that these are preliminary figures, but we are observing a steady and systematic improvement in road traffic safety in Poland,” major Robert Opas stated.

He also pointed out that recently the European Commission positively assessed Poland’s progress in improving road safety, indicating the largest reduction in the number of road fatalities in the EU over the past five years, by 35 percent compared with 2019.

According to data from the Traffic Bureau of the National Police Headquarters, in 2024 there were 21,519 road accidents. A total of 1,896 people were killed and 24,782 were injured, including 7,796 who sustained serious injuries.
