ETS Reform? Morawiecki: “For years I said what they didn’t want to hear”

“Today, another European summit is taking place in Brussels, where Europe’s leaders will discuss the ETS. It is a pity they did not listen earlier to the Law and Justice (PiS) government, when, as Poland’s representative at successive European summits, I said for many years what they did not want to hear, and now, as we see the catastrophic consequences of Europe’s deindustrialization, they are trying to come to their senses,” said Mateusz Morawiecki, MP for Law and Justice (PiS).

ETS to be abolished?

A debate is underway in Europe on the need to reform the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS). Some countries are already announcing changes in this area at the national level. At the same time, politicians from Law and Justice (PiS) emphasize the need for Poland to completely withdraw from the ETS system. On Monday, they submitted a draft parliamentary resolution obliging the government to pull Poland out of this mechanism.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, also recently spoke on the issue.

“As for the ETS, let me give one figure: without the ETS, we would now be consuming 100 billion cubic meters more gas, which would once again make us more vulnerable and more dependent. Therefore, we need the ETS, but we must modernize it. I look forward to continuing the current debate in the European Parliament”, she stated.

Morawiecki: “Let’s say STOP to climate madness!”

Mateusz Morawiecki, MP for Law and Justice (PiS) and former Prime Minister, published a post on social media in which he pointed to his actions regarding the ETS.

“While the ETS is destroying the European economy – I am taking action. I have discussed this with prime ministers – Czech leader Andrej Babiš and Italy’s Giorgia Meloni, as well as other leaders. As President of the ECR, I also sent a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. We are doing everything to build a real coalition to stop the climate madness and the ETS system, which is hitting Polish companies and the wallets of Poles!”, he declared.

He added that “there is no other way – either we immediately suspend and reform the ETS, which I have been calling for for many years, or we will irreversibly destroy the European economy!”

“Today, another European summit is taking place in Brussels, where European leaders will discuss this issue. It is a pity they did not listen earlier to the Law and Justice (PiS) government, when, as Poland’s representative at successive European summits, I said for many years what they did not want to hear, and now, as we see the catastrophic consequences of Europe’s deindustrialization, they are trying to come to their senses,” the former Prime Minister stressed.

In his opinion, “the task of the Polish Prime Minister is to build an alliance of countries that will effectively say STOP to the European Commission’s climate madness – this is required by Poland’s raison d’état, our security, and economic development.”

“Let’s say STOP to climate madness!”, he appealed.
