A Warsaw family’s eviction has stirred political controversy after city authorities issued a court order for a couple and their six-year-old child to vacate a municipal apartment. The case was brought to light by the conservative news portal Niezalezna.pl and has since become a flashpoint in the ongoing political debate.
The family, residing in a tenement on Zakroczymska Street in the Śródmieście district, reportedly received no approval to extend their tenancy despite repeated appeals to the Municipal Property Management Board. Ultimately, the city took the matter to court, demanding that the family “vacate and surrender the premises.”
“Shocking,” says Błaszczak
The issue surfaced during a recent presidential debate aired on the soon-to-be-defunct TVP and was later addressed by Law and Justice (PiS) politician Mariusz Błaszczak during an appearance on Telewizja Republika.
“It’s shocking. It shows Rafał Trzaskowski’s attitude toward the issues he’s responsible for,” Błaszczak stated in an interview with journalist Michał Rachoń.
The PiS lawmaker recalled working alongside the late President Lech Kaczyński during his tenure as mayor of Warsaw. “President Kaczyński had a completely different approach. He was deeply engaged in the concerns of Warsaw residents. That’s how he saw his role. Trzaskowski couldn’t care less. He sees himself as destined for other things—traveling the world, South America,” Błaszczak said.
During the debate, Trzaskowski claimed the housing matter was now in the hands of the court and beyond the city’s influence. However, Niezalezna.pl published court documents indicating the lawsuit was initiated by the City of Warsaw itself.
“A President Under a Glass Dome?”
Błaszczak argued that Trzaskowski is out of touch with local issues and avoids critical media scrutiny. “I suspect he’s counting on media cover, which is why he refuses to answer questions from Republica journalists. That’s why he didn’t show up to this debate—he’s afraid of tough questions. He assumes the restructured TVP wouldn’t challenge him,” Błaszczak said.
“Is that the kind of president we want for Poland? Someone who’s been handed everything on a silver platter? Someone who lives in a bubble? He doesn’t deal with the concerns of Warsaw residents—and he won’t deal with the concerns of Polish citizens either,” he concluded.
