Former Foreign Minister Has an Important Question for Sikorski. “This Is Harmful to the National Interest Today”

“I will ask whether it is in Poland’s interest right now to open a debate about Polexit, why the foreign minister is doing this – that is a question that needs to be asked. This debate does not exist today; if it does take place, these are marginal voices. I believe that opening a debate on Polexit today is harmful from the point of view of the national interest,” said former Minister of Foreign Affairs Szymon Szynkowski vel Sęk in an interview with Niezalezna.

The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Radosław Sikorski, in his speech listed the benefits stemming from membership in the European Union, emphasizing that “Poland’s raison d’état is its presence in the EU and co-shaping it.” He accused conservative associations and right-wing politicians of “building a program aimed at paralyzing the EU” and devoted considerable attention to presenting the potential negative consequences of leaving the EU.

“Above all, there was a lot of chaos in that speech. In a speech by the head of Polish diplomacy, there should be a sense that there is a plan, an order. It turns out that it is difficult to discern such a plan in the chaos affecting the Ministry of Foreign Affairs – we know there are no ambassadors there, there is a sweeping personnel purge, many key officials lack security clearances. This translates into foreign policy and it was visible in that speech – all over the place, no plan and no idea,” assessed former Foreign Minister Szymon Szynkowski vel Sęk in an interview with Niezalezna, commenting on Sikorski’s address.

He pointed out that much of the foreign minister’s speech focused on the European Union, as well as on Polexit.

“I will ask whether it is in Poland’s interest right now to open a debate about Polexit, why the foreign minister is doing this – that is a question that needs to be asked. This debate does not exist today; if it does take place, these are marginal voices. I believe that opening a debate on Polexit today is harmful from the point of view of the national interest,” Szynkowski vel Sęk stressed.
