Fuel Price Laws Signed Mid-Flight. President Makes Decision “En Route to Dallas”

President of Poland Karol Nawrocki signed legislation aimed at lowering fuel prices during his flight to Dallas, presidential spokesperson Rafał Leśkiewicz announced on X. The bills had been passed earlier on Friday by the Sejm.

On Friday, the Sejm passed—and the Senate approved without amendments—an amendment to the Act on mandatory stocks of crude oil, petroleum products and natural gas, as well as the rules for responding to threats to the state’s fuel security and disruptions on the oil market. Lawmakers also adopted changes to the Act on the National Revenue Administration and an amendment to the excise tax law.

The purpose of both pieces of legislation is to bring down fuel prices at gas stations. The laws will enter into force the day after their publication in the Journal of Laws.

The amendment concerning, among others, the law on mandatory oil reserves introduces a mechanism for calculating the maximum fuel price that will apply at gas stations.

Meanwhile, the amendment to the excise tax law allows for a temporary—until June 30—reduction of excise duty rates on fuels through a government regulation.

However, opposition representatives argue that the government’s actions come significantly too late and claim that the proposed measures are merely a copy of solutions previously presented by Przemysław Czarnek.
