General Calls for the Immediate Reinstatement of Universal Conscription

General Leon Komornicki calls for the immediate reinstatement of universal conscription in Poland, advocating for eight months of military training for all citizens as part of national education.

General Leon Komornicki, former Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces, has called for the immediate reinstatement of universal conscription. He advocates for an eight-month military training program for all citizens—both men and women—as part of a national defense education system. According to him, this experience should also be a prerequisite for those aspiring to high-ranking positions in politics and business. “In my opinion, all politicians should include this point in their election campaigns. They should speak with one voice, in the interest of Poland, that this must be done,” Komornicki stated in an interview with Radio Zet.

Military Service as an Extension of National Education

The general emphasized that compulsory military training should become an integral part of the national education system. “We have basic education, secondary school, and after that, everyone should go to the army for eight months, both women and men, as the next stage of defense education,” he explained. He further stressed that the program would be well-organized, engaging, and led by experienced instructors, ensuring both military and civilian preparation. “This can all be excellently arranged to align with civilian training. That way, an additional level of knowledge is gained, which is very important,” he added.
